Podcast

In this week’s activities, I had the privilege not just to explore but to express my understanding of digital literacy using podcasts/ screencasts. In the first learning activity, I was asked to use an online tool of my choice to create a short 45-60 second podcast/ screencast explaining what I’ve learned so far about being in a digital world. Further, the online tool I chose to do my research on is SoundCloud. Being that I like to record videos and take pictures, I was open to the idea of creating an audio recording, it was very much exciting. I was so excited I started right away! And as usual, it was very easy to use. It was fun to record and hear myself, it kind of brought me out of my comfort zone a little bit.

So, to start, I first made a detailed outline (or script as the site calls it) demonstrating what I was going to say. This was a beneficial aspect of the assignment because it made the process faster and minimized any errors I may have made. However, fortunately for me, there were no errors! I finished in good time. I would say it took me about 2 - 3 minutes to complete everything, which is quite satisfying; (pat on the back for me!)

To take it back to what I was explaining, after the creation of the script, I then switched my focus and discussed the importance of digital security. This topic is very important because these days I hear a lot of stories where people’s computers get hacked and all their information is taken. Not to mention, we live in a time of unknown links and connectivity, hence, it is so easy for people like us not to remember that danger is out there on the internet, apps on our mobile devices, and social media. On the other hand, it useful for completing assignments or learning in general but we need to keep in mind that it is not always safe. Therefore, there are many steps provided in order to avoid such situations, like limiting the amount of information placed online and those we share it with, for example.

Finally, podcasts/ screencasts are tools that contribute to my digital learning in a way that allows me to say what I want and get others to hear what I’m saying and why I say it. As a progressing digital learner, I do plan on including podcasts to my innovative section of my PLE to bring up new ideas and methods on ways of being a smart digital citizen. I can also create presentations and this will make learning more interactive and fun for myself. At the same time, I do get a little tired of writing or typing, therefore, using my voice is another great alternative to developing a positive yet creative learning environment!
